Edible Manhattan's Good Spirits

Image
Good Spirits has certainly left us in good spirits!  We just went to the Edible Manhattan food event at La.venue (a really cool space, adjoining The Tunnel where we had beer, bourbon, and barbecue last month) and I came home with my purse stuffed full of: 2 loaves of bread (each the size of my head), 1 can of pear hard cider, 1 glass chalice, 1 can of beer, 2 bottles of San Pellegrino, and the latest edition of Edible Manhattan!  #swag Let's rewind: Unfortunately, busy day jobs (one of us is a tax accountant) kept us from arriving promptly, and by the time we got there a few stations were *gasp* out of food.  We made a beeline for Manhattan Cricket Club's table, which was making a riff on a Tom Collins called "Tommyrotter Collins" made with - guess what - Tommyrotter gin, lemon, agave, seltzer, and mace blade (whut???).  It was super refreshing and citrusy and not too strongly alcoholic, but I regretted not putting at least a little bit of food in my tu...

We've got the ~spirit~, let's hear it! This week, Veritasty is heading over to Edible Manhattan's Good Spirits event for some cleverly crafted cocktails and carefully curated comestibles.  We've got the inside scoop, and it sounds like some of our favorites will have a showing like Angry Orchard Hard Cider , Bruce Cost Ginger Ale, Bustan NYC , Neuman's Kitchen , and ROYCE' Chocolate! Judging by the balance of distilleries, breweries, and non-alcoholic beverage-makers, I'm definitely looking forward to some chic and sophisticated mixed drinks, and certainly pairing them with sweet and savory treats from cool restaurants from around the city. Who:      Edible Manhattan ( http://bit.ly/1PfshJh ) What:    7th Annual Good Spirits Where:   La.venue, 608 West 28th Street, New York, NY When:    Thursday, March 3, 2016 from 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets cost $65 per person and can be purchased at  http://bit.ly/1PfshJh !...

Maison

Another venture into the cuisine that is "brunch".  Particularly, drunk brunch, everybody's favorite!  Right in the middle of the theater district, there is a place that is open 24 hours and specializes in the food of Brittany, France.  I'm not sure if they would call themselves a diner, restaurant, brasserie, or whatever else, but that's Maison for you.  We had brunch on a beautiful Sunday morning, seated outside under their big orange umbrellas.  All around us were theater-goers and theater workers (topics of conversation overheard included performing as a background singer/dancer at the Tony Awards) and tourists arriving by the bus-full. Our waitress was a pretty woman with a heavy French accent (was it authentic or was it for show?) and looked exactly like Maya Rudolph.  Alex had the Maison burger with herb fries and I had the Farmer's Egg Cocotte.  I was confused when they brought out my entree - which I thought would be shaped like an omelet...

BEERFEST

I think all too commonly you hear people (forgive me for stereotyping, but usually younger females like myself) say, "I don't like beer!"  They - and by they , I mean I - would rather nurse a cocktail with something alcoholic mixed with something fruity and garnished with something equally fruity: something with a more straightforward taste and a more immediate alcoholic buzz.  Today, my friends and I resolved to teach each other about beer and the huge varietal potential that beer has, in order to help us break out of the "I don't like beer" mindset with our very own little beer tasting! Disclaimer: I know next-to-nothing about beer so the stuff that I'm about to rattle off has come to me either from Charlie Lopresto, who wrote the fascinating post on Sixpoint Craft Beer from Cook Out NYC , or from my primitive taste buds, or the Internet.  That being said, here is what our beer tasting was like! First, we got a few mellow-flavored snacks (e.g....
